Marketing and Public Policy Workshop and Doctoral Seminar: June 3-7, 2012

Workshop Overview

In an intensive four-day biennial workshop, doctoral students and junior faculty meet, learn from and work with senior scholars from disciplines such as marketing, economics, psychology, decision theory and public policy. The workshop precedes the Marketing and Public Policy conference, extending the young scholars' opportunity to meet with and learn from other scholars in the field.

Invited Scholars

Invited scholars lead sessions on conducting policy-related research, including critical policy issues and theoretical and methodological approaches. Using their own research, the invited scholars demonstrate how to develop projects that are impactful both in terms of academic publications and practice. Invited scholars are selected based on their multi-disciplinary perspectives demonstrated both in their research and public policy work.

Resident Faculty

Resident faculty organize sessions, facilitate discussion and small group interaction as well as provide support and guidance to the young scholars to develop a research proposal as part of the output from the workshop experience.

How to Apply

Young scholars, typically in their third doctoral year, apply to the workshop with the endorsement of a faculty member at their home university. (The workshop also accepts a small number of junior faculty.)  Historically 20 to 30 students have been selected based on evidence of preparedness to benefit from the workshop. The workshop is intentionally kept small to provide ample opportunity for interaction and mentorship among the resident scholars, invited scholars and the young scholars.

What to Expect

The young scholars are assigned extensive pre-workshop readings, as well as expected to develop an idea for a research proposal so that students: 1) come prepared to be actively involved in the presentations and discussions among the invited and resident scholars, and 2) leave with a concrete plan for future research. To enhance their future involvement in research in this domain, an important final event of the workshop is the presentation of a research proposal by each participant. Both the resident and invited scholars as well as the other students provide feedback based on the proposal presentations. The desired outcome from this process is to engage participants in research for their doctoral dissertations, conference presentations and journal publications.
