Ph.D. Program: Overview

The object of the School of Accountancy's Ph.D. program is to graduate individuals with the qualifications and ability to obtain positions and succeed in research-oriented institutions, primarily universities. As such, our Ph.D. program focuses on preparing students to critique and produce accounting research that is publishable in premier accounting journals. During the program, students take required and elective seminars in accounting, statistics, economics and other areas consistent with their research interests (e.g., econometrics, psychology, finance). Students are encouraged to work closely with faculty to develop a research portfolio in addition to their required dissertation. Faculty mentoring Ph.D. students publish in premier academic journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics andContemporary Accounting Research.  Many recent graduates have joint publications with faculty in these and other premier journals.

 Ph.D. students receive a combination of Research and Teaching Assistantships, which provide a stipend and a tuition waiver, as long as they are making good progress in the program. Assistantships help students to develop the required research and teaching expertise for success in academia. Recent graduates have placed at the University of Pittsburgh, University of South Carolina, SUNY-Buffalo, Kent State University, Kennesaw State University and University of North Florida.
