Combining Disciplines

Health informatics is a multi-disciplinary field that combines knowledge from medical areas, healthcare administration and information technology. The program at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business is therefore a joint venture between the Institute of Health Administration and Department of Computer Information Systems, leaders in their respective disciplines. Moreover, the program has close relations to several medical institutions in the Southeast.

The People Behind Health Informatics

The Healthcare Informatics Program at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business was initiated and developed by a cross-disciplinary team of people with both healthcare and information technology backgrounds. In the picture, they are from left to right: Bala Ramesh, Upkar Varshney, Andy Sumner, Mark Keil, Lisette Branscomb, Lars Mathiassen and Carl Stucke. The program was initiated in 2006 and has seen developments and innovations in the years since.

Strength of CIS

The Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS) within the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University is consistenly ranked in the top 10% of graduate and undergraduate programs. There are 20 full-time faculty with doctorates from such schools as Harvard, M.I.T., Cornell, Indiana, Minnesota and other prominent universities; many of our faculty hold endowed chairs or professorships.

The CIS Department has earned recognition as one of the top programs in the world in terms of leading-edge research productivity based on a study published in the Academy of Management Journal that focused on research publications in the most prestigious journals in the information systems field.

Because of the breadth and excellence of the CIS Department, it has received considerable recognition over the years including a $2 million grant from IBM and top rankings both in U.S. News & World Report and Computerworld

  • In 2011, the department’s undergraduate program was ranked 8th in the nation and in March 2012 the graduate program advanced one spot to be ranked 9th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report
  • The department’s MBA concentration and major earned the Robinson College of Business recognition as a top 25 “Techno MBA Program” in a Computerworld survey. Computerworld has ranked the department as second only to M.I.T. among information systems graduate programs in the United States.
  • Sourcebook rated the CIS undergraduate program as one of the top five in the country.

Strength of Health Administration

The Institute of Health Administration provides quality graduate programs for education, research, and career development in healthcare administration and management across the full range of contemporary healthcare organizational settings. The CAHME-accredited MBA/MHA and other degree programs offered by the institute produce qualified healthcare management professionals sought after by the healthcare industry.

Tomorrow's executive leaders in healthcare get their start in the Institute of Health Administration at Robinson. The dynamically changing landscape of healthcare management requires innovative leaders who bring new ideas to bear on this complex and growing industry, and students in these programs receive the education, research and support they need to take the lead in serving the healthcare needs of communities.

The record shows that all of the master's graduates of the institute find employment in business and healthcare soon after graduation.
