Accountancy

Lawrence Brown, Distinguished Professor, has assumed a three-year position as editor for The Accounting Review, the major research publication of the American Accounting Association. Vincent Giovinazzo, professor, gave a seminar titled, "Getting Behind the Numbers" to business reporters for the Associated Press in Atlanta. The seminar was designed to assist these reporters in developing a more sophisticated understanding of reported financial data.

Computer Information Systems

Lars Mathiassen, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Digital Commerce, joins Robinson this fall. He brings an international reputation as a researcher and broad experience in the commercialization of technology. He has written 10 books and contributed to hundreds of other books, journal papers and refereed conference papers.

Hospitality

David Pavesic, professor, was selected by Michigan State University's School of Hospitality Business to receive the school's Distinguished 75th Anniversary Year Alumnus Award.

International

Karen Loch, director of the Institute of International Business, served as a judge for the first Global Enterprise Olympics sponsored by Global Achievers. The first Enterprise Olympics pitted high school teens from 10 countries against each other as they attempted to find a solution to the challenge, which combined science, technology and entrepreneurship in a common theme with global significance, all within 24 hours.

Management

Kay Bunch, instructor, conducted a workshop on recent developments in employment law for the Southern Crescent chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management held at Clayton College & State University. The workshop title was "Avoiding Common Employment Law Pitfalls."

Marketing

Wes Johnston, Center for Business and Industrial Marketing (CBIM) RoundTable Professor, taught a seminar on managing services for the Institute for Management Training's Advanced General Managers Program in Berlin, Germany in June.

The CBIM held its summer quarterly meeting in June with 30 managers and GSU community members attending. The topic of the meeting was "Challenges and Opportunities in Business-to-business Marketing." A panel composed of local executives discussed their companies and how they were managing in today's marketing environment. The panel consisted of Stan Jewell, vice president, Protective Products and Services, Southern Mills; Kurt Mueller, vice president, Marketing, Beers Skanska, Inc.; and Michael Thaler, vice president, Strategy, Omnexus. Wes Johnston is director of the CBIM.

Chris Lemley, instructor, has been accepted into the Fulbright Senior Specialists program. This scholarly exchange program is a joint effort of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State (ECA) and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).

Real Estate

Joseph S. Rabianski, Richard Bowers & Company Professor and department chair, has been selected to serve on the Distance Learning Task Force of the Appraisal Foundation. The task force will investigate the use of distance learning options in the educational process for appraiser certification on a national basis.

Risk Management and Insurance

Bob Klein, associate professor and director of the Center for Risk Management and Insurance Research, spoke at an NAACP (Atlanta chapter) meeting on predatory lending and related topics on April 30. He specifically talked about insurance issues affecting low-income people in the broader context of the availability of financial services for this community.
