The Business Engine That Could

The city has proven to be a good location for other industries. For example, Byers Engineering Company, a technical services and software firm for the telecommunications and utility industries, started out in Atlanta in 1971. With clients such as BellSouth, AT&T, and Atlanta Gas, the company hasn’t had to go far to find a fit for its network engineering services. Byers says he never considered going anywhere else, having completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech and an MBA at Georgia State, which he calls "the icing on the cake." In fact, while taking classes for his MBA at night and working by day, he set up the books for his firm in his accounting class, a system the company continues to use today.

Rosser’s identity is tied closely to Atlanta as well. Located in the heart of downtown, the architectural and engineering firm has played a role in designing and constructing some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the Georgia Dome, Turner Field, and CNN headquarters.

Currently completing the new World of Coca-Cola near the Georgia Aquarium, Rosser is also part of the team handling program management for expansion of the airport, including the recently opened fifth runway and an international terminal scheduled for completion within the next five years.

"The airport expansion has the possibility of being as momentous to the city as some of the events of our past," says Little, Rosser’s Chairman.

Atlanta also has been a supportive setting for the reinsurance business, which provides insurance for insurance companies. "To be close to my customers, a good transportation system is essential, and with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world is at my front door," says Holland. The professionalism of the Georgia Department of Insurance as a home state regulator, an attractive quality of life for employees, and a well-educated workforce are the advantages Holland cites for doing business here. Contributing to the quality of that workforce, according to Holland, is Georgia State’s Department of Risk Management and Insurance, one of the top-ranked programs in the nation.
