Fostering a Sense of Community
Dear Alumni and Friends,
The J. Mack Robinson College of Business is a community
of almost 60,000 alumni, 7,000 students, 200 full-time faculty,
and countless others who are touched by what we do
in the city of Atlanta and around the world.
In order to foster a better sense of community, we’ve
altered our communications strategy to provide you
with more information about happenings at Robinson.
First, this magazine moves from its traditional thematic
approach to provide a more wide-ranging look at the College;
its faculty, programs, alumni, and research. We’ll also
feature leaders in business, primarily from Atlanta, which
is not only our home but a business laboratory and an
extended classroom for the Robinson College. Our intent
is to continue to display the thought leadership for which
our College and magazine are known, but to do so by
featuring a broader range of subjects.
In addition, we have launched a companion publication,
Back to Business, which is available to all contributing
alumni; it offers expanded alumni profiles, class notes, faculty
features, and other items of interest to graduates.
In this issue of State of Business, our cover story focuses on
the new and exciting Global Partners MBA. Our Lessons from Leaders
section features the founder of the Georgia Aquarium and Home Depot’s
cofounder Bernie Marcus, as well as Atlanta Braves general manager
John Schuerholz.
In our feature on alumni, we talk with graduates Chuck Bowling
and his father, Skip. As executive vice president for sales and
marketing for MGM Grand Resorts, Chuck takes us behind the
scenes in Las Vegas, while we learn of Skip’s background in
the aircraft-manufacturing business. We also find out why both
remain connected to Robinson.
If you saw or know about the popular movie The Devil Wears
Prada, you must read about Bennett Tepper’s research on bully
bosses. Another member of our faculty, renowned researcher
Larry Brown, examines backdating of stock options.
We hope you enjoy our new look: more news, more features,
and a chance for you to connect with the Robinson community
as never before. And by all means, let us know what you think.
Your comments and story ideas are welcome.
Best regards,

H. Fenwick Huss
