To this day
Skip Bowling remembers his son’s first Georgia State
experience. In 1971 Skip was finishing his last evening
MBA class at Georgia State’s downtown campus. As
he headed for the then popular Bucket Shop, a student
gathering place in Underground Atlanta, he noticed in
the distance a small child sitting on the curbstone. He
wondered why a parent would leave his or her child
unattended. As he came closer, however, he saw that
the child was his son, Chuck. Seconds later, his wife
(and Chuck’s mother), Linda, appeared with several
friends. It was a surprise party for Skip and Chuck’s
fi rst introduction to Georgia State. Chuck would later
receive his own Robinson College degree.
While the Bowlings are different in many ways, they
are alike in the fond memories they hold of Georgia
State and their appreciation for the important role the
Robinson College played in their careers.
Both Bowlings also stay close to Georgia State. Skip
was reconnected a few years ago when Georgia State
president Carl Patton invited him to represent the
university at the investiture of a new president at
San Diego State University. Later he was a guest of
Dr. Patton at Georgia State’s research project at the
Mount Wilson observatory in Southern California. Both
Skip and Chuck also recently visited with Robinson dean
Fenwick Huss to learn more about current activities of
the College and the University.
So what made this father/son tandem so successful?
Both attribute hard work and a Georgia State education
as keys to their success. But for the boy on the curb,
there’s one more thing. "My dad," said Chuck. "It’s
important to have a role model, and he was the best."
