An Appreciating Asset

Dear Alumni and Friends,

One of Atlanta’s greatest assets is its access to great airlines and one of the world’s finest airports.

Yet, the airline industry itself has been in turmoil for the past several years, and the fallout has affected everyone – the airlines, the airport, employees, and airline customers alike.

In this issue of State of Business, we look at the airline industry today, focusing on Delta, AirTran, and Hartsfield- Jackson. We introduce you to Delta’s new CEO, Richard Anderson, and recount the airline’s emergence from bankruptcy and new emphasis on customer service and international routes.

We also speak with AirTran’s top man, Joe Leonard, who reveals details of the long battle waged between the “low-cost” air carriers and the legacy carriers.

Ben DeCosta, aviation general manager for Hartsfield- Jackson, describes what it takes to keep Atlanta’s airport, the busiest in the world, at peak efficiency to handle record numbers of passengers who pass through each year.

We also talk with two alumni, Mackey McDonald, head of VF Corporation, and Kevin Lofton, president and CEO of Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver, and recently elected chair of the powerful American Hospital Association. Kevin takes us “To the Point” on the health care in America.

Rajeev Dhawan’s economic forecast, and our “In Brief ” section of College events and updates round out this issue.

We appreciate your continued support of the College and welcome your comments and suggestions.

Best regards,

H. Fenwick Huss
Dean
