ACCOUNTANCY
Chris Fenn, instructor, was renamed to the board of authors for two of the leading textbooks on federal taxation, "CCH Federal Taxation - Comprehensive Topics" and "CCH Federal Taxation -Basic Principles." This will begin Fenn's fifth year as a primary or contributing author for books on federal taxation published by CCH, Inc.
A paper by A. Faye Borthick, professor (co-authored with Don Jones, a former Robinson faculty member), titled ''Analyzing a potential warranty call center budget overrun: Using database queries to solve business problems," received a Best Paper - Education Award at the American Accounting Association Information Systems Midyear Conference.
COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS
The Special Interest Group on Education of the Association for Information Technology Professionals (formerly DPMA), at their November 8 annual conference in San Diego, California, recognized Ephraim R. McLean, Regents' Professor and George E. Smith Eminent Scholars' Chair as the "Information Systems Educator of the Year.''
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
University President Carl Patton and Bijan Faziollahl, professor, attended the fifth anniversary celebration of the Caucasus School Business, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, which was established with the assistance of Georgia State as a part of university partnership programs in the former Soviet Union funded by the Department of State and USAID.
MANAGEMENT
G. Peter Zhang, associate professor, edited a research book titled "Neural Networks in Business Forecasting" which has just been published by IRM Press (2004). Zhang was recently invited to serve as associate editor for the journal Neurocomputing.
Lucy McClurg, associate professor and Kevin Levine, visiting instructor, were awarded best paper in the Organizational Behavior Division for "Contract Workers and Client Work Team Participation," which also was presented at the Southern Industrial Relations and Human Resources Conference and published in the proceedings.
MARKETING
The 12th annual Marketing Award for Excellence breakfast event was held February 27 at the JW Marriott at Lenox. The MAX awards recognize new products, new services and new marketing techniques developed by Georgia-based companies during 2003. Judges are members of the GSU Marketing RoundTable. The keynote speaker was Peter Schwarzenbauer, president and chief executive officer of Porsche Cars North America, Inc. The grand winner was Interface Flooring Systems for InterfaceFLOR and the i2 Collection; the two winners were the American Honda Motor Company for the Honda HRX lawnmower and Georgia-Pacific for the en-Motion Automated Touchless Towel System.
Ken Bernhardt, Regents' Professor, marketing department chair and Taylor E. Little, Jr Professor, and Sevo Eroglu, associate professor, visited in August with the Minister of Tourism, heads of tourism and travel associations, hotel general managers and other travel and tourism executives to help develop a marketing plan for increasing Ghana's tourism industry. This is part of a $3 million grant from USAID for Georgia State's Ghana Tourism Capacity Development Initiative,
Naveen Donthu, Katherine S. Bernhardt Research Professor and Wesley Johnston, CBIM RoundTable Professor, facilitated at the Retail Summit & Post-Audit Best Practices Forum held in November. Donthu and Johnston are now part of a multi-university research team that will benchmark trade promotions and post-audit practices in various industries.
George Moschis, Alfred Bernhardt Research Professor and director of the Center for Mature Consumer Studies, was invited by the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to provide assistance with the design of a government-funded national study of older consumers. While in Malaysia, he also gave a series of seminars to faculty and doctoral students of the University of Malaya, University of Putra, University of Utara Malaysia and Kolej University.
Maryann Wysor, marketing instructor, received the Francis W. Weeks Award of Merit from the Association for Business Communication at the 68th Annual Convention October. The award acknowledges contributions to the profession and recognizes outstanding advancement in the discipline through service, leadership and projects.
Mike Schall, former senior vice president of sales and marketing for Wise Foods, has been appointed Executive in Residence for the Marketing Department.
