Department of Marketing

Frequently Asked Questions

Which degree is right for me?

The answer depends primarily on what you want to do with the degree.  The MBA is the traditional broad-based, relatively structured degree. It is particularly well-suited for those without an undergraduate degree in business.  The MS program offers in-depth training in Marketing through a highly flexible program.

In a recent survey, employers were asked whether they had a degree preference, assuming two applicants had equal qualifications.  Forty-three percent said it would make no difference which degree the person had, 40% preferred the MBA and 17% preferred the MS. Of those stating a preference, the MBA was preferred because it was broader in scope and the more familiar degree.  Those preferring the MS wanted the more focused training.

When asked about salary differences, 89% of the employers said they would offer the same salary to an MBA or MS.  When asked about opportunities for advancement, 62% said the degree would not matter while 32% said the MBA would offer a better opportunity.

The best source of information on the degree that is right for you is the person who would hire for the positions in which you are interested.  Consider doing some fieldwork to choose what's best for you.

What courses should I take?

The following are required courses for MS students and may be considered good core courses by MBA students:

Mk 8100 Buyer Behavior

Mk 8200 Marketing Research

MK 8900 Strategic Market Planning

For electives, the department offers a wide variety, allowing students to match their own interests.

In a recent survey, employers were asked to list the most important 3-5 courses in marketing for their business.  Overall, the top five mentions were:

Mk 8900 Strategic Market Planning

Mk 8510  Business-to-Business Marketing

Mk 8300 Marketing Communications and Promotion

Mk 8200 Marketing Research

Mk 8340 Sales Management

There were some differences in preferences by type of industry, by the type of customer served (e.g., businesses or consumers), and the department that the respondent represented.

What if I want to change from an MBA to and MS or vice versa?

The application and acceptance process is the same for both degrees. Once accepted, a student may petition to change programs.  The ability to transfer courses from one degree to the other is dependent on the nature of the courses taken and the degree requirements.
