October 7, 2008 (ATLANTA) Bill Curry, head football coach at Georgia State University, has been appointed as Distinguished Executive Fellow in the University's J. Mack Robinson College of Business. As such, Curry will hold seminars on leadership as part of Robinson's Executive Education program.
The coach, whose Panther football team will debut in 2010, is the author of the recently-released Ten Men You Meet in the Huddle, which explores the exceptional personal traits that led to success for 10 of the NFL's leading players and coaches. He is a frequent speaker on the subject of leadership and recently served as the director of the Leadership Baylor program at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
According to Robinson Dean H. Fenwick Huss, "Coach Curry has shown how integrity and commitment can lead to success in football, business and everyday life. At Robinson, he will provide lessons on leadership that transcend sports and apply equally as well to today's highly competitive global business environment."
Curry played football at Georgia Tech, where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in industrial management. He played in the NFL from 1965-74 and was a starting center in three Super Bowls: for Green Bay in 1967 and for Baltimore in 1969 and 1971.
Curry spent 17 years as a collegiate head football coach, starting with Georgia Tech from 1980-86, where he was ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Coach of the Year in 1985 after a 9-2-1 season. Curry was 26-10 during his three-year stint at Alabama (1987-89), won the SEC (Southeastern Conference) championship in 1989 and was named National Coach of the Year that same year. He was head coach at Kentucky from 1990-96.
Prior to being named Georgia State head football coach in June of this year, Curry served as a football analyst for ESPN. He is a member of the Georgia Football Hall of Fame and is a past member of the American Football Coaches Association Ethics Committee. He was also just named recipient of the President Gerald R. Ford Legends Center Award, which honors former collegiate or pro centers who have "made extraordinary contributions to his team during his football career; or have proven to be an exemplary citizen, philanthropist or leader in the business or football community."
Curry will begin working with Robinson's Executive Education program in 2009. He will be introduced as Distinguished Executive Fellow at a reception to be held at the Buckhead Club on November 20.
