Professorship in Capital Markets Partially Funded by 3:1 Matching Grant from SunTrust Alumni-Employees: New Position Enhances Widely Acclaimed Robinson Finance Department
April 30, 2008 -(ATLANTA) - Harley E. "Chip" Ryan, Jr. has been named the SunTrust Professor in Capital Markets at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. The announcement was made today by H. Fenwick Huss, Dean of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, at a ceremony at the World Trade Center Atlanta in the SunTrust Plaza.
The SunTrust Professorship in Capital Markets was established to attract and retain a scholar of world class ability and recognition, and support outstanding doctoral student research assistants.
Ryan, in addition to serving as SunTrust Professor in Capital Markets, is also an Associate Professor in the Robinson College Finance Department. Before joining Robinson, he was the Louisiana Department of Insurance Professor and Associate Professor in Finance at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and Assistant Professor in Finance at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
An accomplished researcher, Ryan 's research interests span a wide array of topics in finance and capital markets including compensation and incentive systems, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, the role of financial intermediaries in corporate decision-making, capital investment decisions, and insurance. He has published papers in several journals and has made more than 50 presentations at national and regional conferences.
The gift from SunTrust involved a 3:1 match for their employee/alumni contributions.
At the ceremony, Executive Vice President—Wealth and Investment for SunTrust William Rogers called the Professorship a "trend-setting partnership for the school" and encouraged both representatives of the College and the Bank to "work together to leverage and grow the relationship even further." He added that not only is the partnership between the Bank and the University significant, "there is no more important relationship to the City of Atlanta than that with Georgia State University."
Dean Huss said that "We are most grateful to SunTrust and its employees for helping to create this Professorship. We highly value SunTrust's continuing support of the College and Georgia State University and believe this Professorship will further enhance the national and international recognition of our Finance Department."
