ATLANTA – An organization devoted to strengthening collegiate insurance education will soon have a new home as the trustees of the S.S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education have decided to relocate to the Department of Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
The foundation is named for the father of collegiate insurance education, Wharton professor Solomon S. Huebner. Established in 1941 at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania, the foundation provides educational fellowships to the most promising scholars who are pursuing academic careers in insurance and risk management education. It also promotes research that addresses business and policy issues facing the industry. Over the years the foundation has helped more than 200 Huebner Fellows at Wharton earn their degrees and thereby launch their academic careers.
With its move to Atlanta, the Huebner Foundation will now support Ph.D. candidates in Robinson's internationally respected risk management and insurance program.
Commenting on the announcement, RMI department chair Richard D. Phillips said, “We are gratified that the board of trustees has chosen to affiliate the Huebner Foundation with Robinson and Georgia State. It’s a powerful imprimatur.” Phillips, a Huebner Fellow during his graduate studies at Wharton, added, “These fellowships will allow us to produce an even greater number of exceptionally qualified teachers and researchers for universities throughout North America and around the world.”
Speaking about the foundation's selection of Georgia State, C. Robert Henrikson, chairman of the Huebner Board of Trustees said, “We are pleased that the academic programs and goals and objectives of the RMI department at the Robinson College of Business so clearly align with the mission of the Huebner Foundation. That clear alignment will undoubtedly further enhance and expand support from the insurance industry.” Henrikson recently retired from MetLife, Inc. as chairman and CEO.
The Department of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business is the only program at a North American business school that is in the U.S. News & World Report top 10, designated a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries and named an Accredited University Risk Program by PRMIA (Professional Risk Managers' International Association).
