Help Us to Help You

The Systems Support Help Desk's purpose is to help provide better support for you when you call us for assistance. The more information we can get from you about the specific problem, the faster we can help you. When calling for assistance, please provide the following information:

  1. Be specific about the problem. Is it occurring in one program, or in all programs? Does the computer turn on and then not log onto the network? Can other people in your department run this program? Does the program run, but you cannot open a specific document or specific documents?

  2. Copy down and report to us any error messages you may have received.

  3. Were you logged into the network when you experienced the problem?

  4. What were you trying to do when the problem occurred? Has anything changed on your system hardware or software?

  5. Will the person who experienced the problem be available to show us the problem and then verify that it has been fixed?

  6. Did you try turning the computer completely off then re-starting it?


Two preventive measures you can take:

  1. Make sure your data is backed up (See Legato section below).

  2. Scan for viruses on all floppy disks that you get from someone else.

Legato Networker Backup

Legato Networker is a backup system for all the data stored on the college's fileservers, including files saved in the user directories. If you need to recover lost or corrupted files from your user directory on the fileserver, call the HelpDesk (3.7100). Remember, however, you are still responsible for backing up what's on your hard drive.
