Gibler Participates in KIITO Workshop Dr. Karen Gibler joined a dozen colleagues from Europe at a postgraduate workshop at KIITO Graduate School in Real Estate and Facilities Management at Helsinki University of Technology in November. The workshop covered real estate valuation and market analysis issues, facilities management research, land management, and doctoral education. Five PhD students also presented their research to the visiting faculty.

Jim Borders Named as 2006 REIAC/GSU Hall of Distinction Inductee The 2006 REIAC/GSU Hall of Distinction Inductee has been announced. Jim Borders, CEO of Novare Group, will be recognized for the dramatic impact that he and his commercial real estate projects have had on metro Atlanta. A portrait of Mr. Borders will be unveiled at the REIAC Distinguished Lecture by Ed Baker, publisher of the Atlanta Business Chronicle scheduled for October 23 at 4:00 pm in Speakers Auditorium in the GSU Student Center. The public is welcome to attend the lecture.

Gibler joins editorial board Dr. Karen M. Gibler was asked to join the editorial board of the Journal of Real Estate Research in July. JRER is one of only three real estate journals listed in the Social Science Citation Index. Dr. Gibler also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education, Seniors Housing and Care Journal, and the RICS Foundation Research Paper Series. For the past year she has been serving as the editor of the Journal of Corporate Real Estate.
Korab and Cevallos Selected for Mentoring Program The Real Estate Group of Atlanta [R.E.G.A.] has selected Melissa Cevallos and Kathy Korab for its 2006-2007 mentoring program. R.E.G.A. is an association of 150 of Atlanta' s top young commercial real estate professionals representing all sectors of the industry. Korab is an undergraduate student pursuing a BBA with majors in finance and real estate. Cevallos is a graduate student in the MSRE program. Each GSU real estate student selected for the program is matched with a mentor who volunteers time to acquaint the student with the real estate industry. In addition to meeting privately with the mentor, students attend the monthly meetings that consist of an informal roundtable discussion, a networking session, and an invited speaker.
Gibler travels to Spain for Network Meeting
Dr. Karen Gibler spent a week at Alicante University to attend the first meeting of the MIRES (Migracioÿn de Retirados Europeos en España) research network. Funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Educacioÿn y Ciencia, the multidisciplinary group met to collaborate on research projects and to plan an international workshop on international retiree migration and its impacts. The network brings together ten researchers from law, sociology, political science, tourism, demographics, economics, and real estate, representing Spain, the UK, and the US. While in Alicante, Gibler also met with the REVIcVAL (Retirados y Viviendas en la Comunidad Valenciana) research team and participated in a focus group discussion with British retirees.
Rabianski's Text in Chinese
Dr. Joseph Rabianski's text entitled Real Estate Market Analysis: Techniques and Applications has been published in Chinese by China Citic Publishing House, a subcontractor of Thomson Learning of Asia located in Singapore.
Rabianski receives grant Joseph Rabianski received a small grant from The Appraisal Research Foundation to study the estimation procedure to create 3 ratios that are important in retail and office demand forecasting. The research will show analysts how to use government and private vendor data to estimate these ratios for their specific market.
Diaz honored for accounting paper Ernie Larkins and Julian Diaz received an award for Innovation in Accounting Education for their paper, "Locating and Evaluating Tax Authority" at the American Accounting Association's (AAA) annual.
GSU students win NAIOP competition Five graduate students from the Department of Real Estate were awarded the coveted "Silver Shovel" award and $5,000 in scholarship money in the 13th Annual National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) School Challenge. Each year, the competition attracts teams from: Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Kennesaw State University, the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. This year, teams were asked to identify and develop a real estate investment opportunity near the proposed Beltline railway. Robinson students Amy Curry, Gina Corey, Michael Sauer, Vivek Sah, and Reginald Mackey impressed the judges with a proposal for a mixed-use property located on the west side of Midtown. The project, "Waterworks Lofts," consisted of two high-rise buildings offering residential and commercial spaces overlooking a lake. The property included easy access to entertainment venues and major highways, a view of the Atlanta skyline and competitively priced units.
ULI to reprint Rabianski works Dr. Rabianski's latest article "Economic Impact Study for a Big Box Retailer" in Real Estate Issues, has been added to the Economic/Fiscal Impact of Development Information Packet published by the Urban Land Institute. Three other of his articles have been added to the Feasibility Analysis in Real Estate Information Packet. These articles are: "Office Market Demand Analysis" in Real Estate Review; "Primary and Secondary Data: Concepts, Concerns, Errors and Issues" in The Appraisal Journal; and, "Vacancy in Market Analysis and Valuation" in The Appraisal Journal.
Gibler at ARES Dr. Karen Gibler presented a paper titled "The Impact of British Retirees on the Residential Real Estate Market in Valencia, Spain" and chaired a session title "Markets: Impact of Inflation, Competition and Securitization," at the American Real Estate Society meeting in Key West. She also participated in the annual Board of Directors meeting as ARES representative to the International Real Estate Society.

Gibler travels to Weimar June, 2005 - Dr. Karen M. Gibler attended the European Real Estate Society meeting in Weimar, Germany June 7-10. She presented a paper, "German Retirees Living in Alicante: The REVIcVAL Survey" and spoke on a panel "Getting Your Research Published." Several GSU/EBS graduates were also at the meeting, including Marc Breidenbach, Christian Focke, Björn-Martin Kurzrock, and Christoph Pitschke.

First Distinguished Lecture Wednesday, April 26 at the Commerce Club, 4:30 p.m.
The REIAC Distinguished Lecture will be held on the 15th floor of the Commerce Club at 34 Broad Street across from the Robinson College of Business building on Wednesday, April 26. The featured speaker will be Jeffrey L. Warwick, Commercial Real Estate Banking Regional Executive for Bank of America.
Mr. Warwick directs a seven-state business platform for delivering real estate debt capital and advisory solutions for leading real estate companies. He was the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Real Estate Alumni Award from Georgia State University.
Also at this event, a portrait of Jim Jacoby, developer of Atlantic Station, will be unveiled. The portrait will hang in the REIAC/GSU Real Estate Hall of Distinction located in the Robinson College of Business building. Mr. Jacoby will attend.

REIAC Challenge Thursday, April 27 at the Commerce Club, 5:00 p.m.
The REIAC Challenge is a case competition for Georgia State Real Estate students and will be held this year on the 15th floor of the Commerce Club at 34 Broad Street across from the Robinson College of Business building on Thursday, April 27.
This year's teams have been presented with the challenge of developing land use proposals for the Buckhead Village. Sam Massell, former mayor of Atlanta and president of the Buckhead Coalition, will present the challenge to this year's teams.
Team presentations will be judged by a panel of real estate professionals and academics including Roy Black, Georgia State University; Kent Levenson, Easlan Capital; Paul Martin, Premier Atlanta Mortgage; and Brian Olasov, McKenna, Long, and Aldridge.
Snacks and refreshments will be served. Networking at approximately 5:00 with the program to follow.

Georgia Real Estate Commission Awarded Grant to Roy Black and Joseph Rabianski March, 2006 - Roy Black and Joseph Rabianski were awarded a grant by the Georgia Real Estate Commission to initiate and operate an evaluation protocol of all special requests for continuing education credit based on non-traditional educational means and methods. Black and Rabianski will be the only evaluators for this program in Georgia.
Gerontology Alumni Club offers tour of Livable Lifetime Show House March, 2006 - The Gerontology Alumni Club is hosting a special tour of the 2006 Livable Lifetime Show House located at 350 Grand Teton Circle in Fayetteville, GA on Saturday, April 1, 2006 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. This inaugural Show House was produced by the Universal Design Alliance and the tour will be conducted by Rebecca Stahr, ASID, CAPS, CSP and GSU Gerontology Alumni Club president. A Dutch-treat dinner will follow at nearby City Café and Bakery.
The Georgia State University Alumni Association will pay the $5 ticket price for the tour of the 2006 Livable Lifetime Show House for alumni. Guests are $5 each. Reservations are required by March 24th.

Research team receives funding February, 2006 - The Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia has awarded €10,800 to create a research network to study the migration of retired Europeans to Spain. Karen Gibler is the only American investigator in the network. The money is to be used to fund two meetings of the network in Alicante in 2006. This is an extension and expansion of the REVIcVAL (Retirados y Viviendas en la Comunidad Valenciana) project funded by the Valencia Government in 2004-2005.

Rabianski authors Course Manual February, 2006 - Dr. Joseph Rabianski completed a Course Manual for the Appraisal Institute entitled "General Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use". This 30 contact hour course is part of the new income property appraiser certification requirement mandated by the Appraisal Foundation in all 50 states.
Gibler travels to New Zealand January, 2006 - Dr. Karen Gibler presented a paper entitled "Measuring the Added Value of Corporate Real Estate" and chaired a session on research methodology at the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society meeting in Auckland January 22-25. She also participated in the annual Board of Directors meeting of the International Real Estate Society at the same location. She was placed on the IRES Awards Committee and will continue to serve on the African Real Estate Society Task Force.

January 2006 - Joseph Rabianski signed a publishing agreement with Thomson Learning Systems Asia for the translation and publication of his coauthored text with Dr. Neil Carn (Emeritus), et. al. entitled Applied Real Estate Market Analysis Techniques and Applications (1988) into Chinese for sale in the Asia market.

January, 2006 - The Real Estate Alumni Club's annual "Views from the Top" once again featured a stellar list of speakers. The focus for this year's event was, "The Changing Atlanta Real Estate Market." Featured speakers included Rajeev Dhawan, Director of the College's Economic Forecasting; Michael Franco, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds U.S.; Jeff Fuqua, President of Development, The Sembler Company; and Bill Tresham, Chief Operating Officer, Trizec Properties.
The event was moderated by Larry Gramlich, partner, Troutman Sanders and drew more than 500 people.
