Two Publications on International Retiree Housing Choices Results from the study Dr. Gibler conducted on German and British retirees living in Spain have been published in recent editions of International Real Estate Review and International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis. The works examined housing preferences upon arrival as well as when retirees make a second move within Spain.
European and Asian Real Estate Society Meeting Participation
In June, Dr. Gibler attended the joint International and European Real Estate Society meeting in Stockholm, where she chaired the IRES Board of Directors meeting and chaired a panel discussion on the Global Economy and Real Estate markets. She presented two papers, one with visiting researcher Tanja Tyvimaa. Gibler also chaired an IRES panel on the Global Economy and Real Estate at the Asian Real Estate Society meeting in Los Angeles in June.
Gibler Visits Helsinki University of Technology Before attending the IRES-ERES joint conference, Dr. Gibler spent a week at Helsinki University of Technology working with graduate students in the Real Estate, Construction and Planning doctoral program.
Georgia State University releases its spring 2009 Atlanta Real Estate Market Sentiment Index (AREMSI) In the quarterly meeting of its Real Estate Honorary Board, Georgia State University's Department of Real Estate again surveyed its membership to gauge the general condition of the real estate market in Atlanta. This group comprises executives and senior management from most of the premier commercial and residential real estate firms in Atlanta representing a wide swath of disciplines including banking, brokerage, development, investment and construction. Ph.D. Students Publish with Faculty Ph.D. candidates Sherwood Clements and Alan Tidwell have co-authored three recently accepted manuscripts with Dr. Gibler and Dr. Rabianski. "Mixed-Use Development: A Call for Research" will appear later this year in the Journal of Real Estate Literature, while "Mixed-Use Development and Financial Feasibility: Part I Economic and Financial Factors" and "Mixed-Use Development and Financial Feasibility: Part II Physical, Phasing, Design and Public Policy Factors" are appearing in two issues of Real Estate Issues.
Representatives of UAE visit
Dr. Gibler recently traveled to Clemson, SC to meet with representatives of the UAE Real Estate Regulatory Agency who are organizing the Middle East Real Estate Society. Dr. Tom Springer, ARES Treasurer, and Dr. Elaine Worzala joined in the discussion to help the organizers create a regional society under the IRES umbrella organization that Dr. Gibler heads.
Diaz Honored with Research Award Dr. Julian Diaz was named the 2009 recipient of the Richard Ratcliff Award by the American Real Estate Society. The award was given in recognition of his innovative research contributions in applying behavioral economic theories to real estate. The award was created to honor a significant innovative research contribution that extends the real estate discipline, introduces a new paradigm, and "pushes the envelope" of real estate knowledge. The award was announced at the ARES annual meeting.
Gibler Receives Red Pen Award The editor of the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education presented Dr. Gibler with that journal's "red pen" award to recognize service above and beyond the call of duty in the review of articles submitted for publication. The award was given at the annual ARES meeting. Nine faculty and doctoral students presented research papers at the conference.

RERI names Gibler to Its Advisory Board The Real Estate Research Institute, a non-profit organization created to stimulate high-quality research on real estate investment performance and market fundamentals that will elevate the quality of real estate investment decision making, has voted to place Dr. Karen M. Gibler on its Advisory Board. RERI funds research projects conducted by academics, industry, and the investment community.
Barocas and Unger Speak to Corporate Real Estate Management Class Students in RE8100 had the opportunity to learn about corporate real estate management from two experienced executives. Alan J. Barocas, who spent more than 25 years with GAP, shared his experiences with retail expansion and contraction. Sam Unger of Ernst & Young and Atlanta Chapter of CoreNet Global President, discussed strategic planning and leasing office space in the current economic cycle.
REIAC Challenge
On April 23, four teams of Georgia State University real estate students gathered before a panel of industry judges to present their development visions for a strategically located Midtown property owned by ING. At stake were scholarships for each member of the winning team presented by the Southeast Chapter of the Real Estate Investment Advisory Council. Proposals ranged from a medical center, to student housing, to mixed-use developments featuring medical, office, retail and multifamily components. And the verdict? Said ING's Vice President of Real Estate Finance, Greg Michaud, "Excellent proposals and presentations all around. I would hire any of the students who presented tonight." In a very close decision, Greg and his fellow judges, John Beeland of Green Grove Partners, Michael Sauer with BVT Development and Paul Gallimore of Georgia State went with the student housing proposal presented by John McMann, Tim Rollins and Chung Yoo, pictured with the sponsors.
REIAC Distinguished Lecture and Portrait Unveiling
Julie McIntosh, Chief Investment Officer with The Integral Group and member of the Department Honorary Board, delivered the REIAC distinguished lecture on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. A portrait of the most recent inductee into the REIAC/GSU Hall of Distinction was unveiled at the event. The public lecture started at 4:30 p.m. in the Rialto Center.
Honorary Board Breakfast The Departments' Honorary Board held its Spring breakfast meeting April 7.
Introductory ARGUS Seminar On April 11 and 18, the Real Estate department offered introductory ARGUS seminars, providing an excellent opportunity for industry professionals and students to learn about this software package. The software provides all necessary tools for companies in real estate, including lease management, cash flow projections and investment analysis. ARGUS is increasingly being used by real estate companies in their businesses, becoming an industry standard domestically as well as internationally.
Pacific Rim Real Estate Society Meeting Dr. Karen Gibler presented a paper, "Segmenting the Retiree Housing Market Using Preferences," at the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society meeting held in Sydney, Australia, in January.
Invited Article for Spanish Economics Publication Dr. Karen Gibler was part of a team of researchers invited to submit an article entitled "La Migración de Retirados Europeos al Mercado de Viviendas Español. Una Evidencia Sobre Sus Efectos." for CLM Economia, a Spanish scholarly journal. Among the other researchers invited to submit articles on housing for this special issue were Karl Case of Wellesley College and John Quigley of UC-Berkeley.
Zhou successfully defends dissertation Ph.D. candidate Xiaorong Zhou successfully defended her dissertation, "An Investigation into REIT Performance Persistency," on December 17, 2008. Her degree will be conferred at the spring graduation.
 Atlanta's premier economic forecasting and industry panel breakfast, presented by the Real Estate Alumni Group, was held on January 13, 2009 at 55 Allen Plaza.
This year's event, Back to Basics: the Fundamentals of Real Estate, focused on short- and long-term challenges in the local and national market.
Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center, kicked off the morning with his 2009 forecast. After Rajeev's presentation, David Haddow, president and founder of Haddow & Co., moderated a panel discussion featuring Hal Barry, chairman of Barry Real Estate Cos.; Brett Hunsaker, executive vice president of business development at Grubb & Ellis; and John Woodward, director of foreign investment at the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
Sara Smith, president of the Real Estate Alumni Group, presented a check from the group to Julian Diaz, chair of the Real Estate department, to support department activities.
The Real Estate Alumni Group, which is the oldest chartered club within Georgia State's Alumni Association, is known for innovative programming and networking events that bring together industry veterans and rising students.
