Summary of his commencement address Copeland Videos |
ABOUT JAMES COPELAND As Chief Executive Officer, Jim Copeland provided the leadership and vision that enabled Deloitte & Touche USA and its global organization, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, to grow and become the second-largest professional services organizations in the United States and the world. Though recently retired (as of May 31, 2003), Copeland is considered to be the architect of the firm's global strategy, and was responsible for its U.S. and global operations. As CEO, he led the transition of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu from a confederation of national firms to a cohesive network of firms. Copeland also attracted a multicultural leadership team, built consensus around a set of shared beliefs, and molded the partnership culture of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. A straight-talking native of Georgia, Copeland combined a collegial manner with a keen facility for strategy to articulate and achieve ambitious performance objectives for Deloitte. During his tenure, Deloitte grew from the fourth largest professional services firm to second, and from fifth to second globally, significantly increased revenues and partner and principal earnings, dramatically increased the role of women in leadership positions, and positioned Deloitte as a leader in advocating responsible globalization and in the harmonization of global accounting standards. Copeland has presided over an organization that has grown its client base and personnel roster substantially and enhanced its reputation despite an unprecedented crisis in the accounting profession. He continued to place a high priority on the firm's employer of choice initiatives, resulting in five consecutive years on the list of Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For." Just today, Deloitte & Touch was honored with that recognition by Working Mother magazine for the ninth year in a row. Copeland has emerged as a leading spokesperson for the accounting and auditing profession, frequently appearing on television and in newspapers and magazines. He has also addressed Congress, as well as leaders of business and industry at prestigious forums worldwide and offered his ideas on reinforcing ethics, enhancing investor protection and ensuring intelligent reform of the profession. He has actively promoted the creation of a National Financial Review Board, an independent federal agency modeled on the National Transportation Safety Board, to independently examine financial failures and provide recommendations for improvement in the American financial system. Copeland serves on the Board of Directors of The September 11th Fund, the New York City Partnership and Investment Fund, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S.-Japan Business Council. He is a member of the Council of the World Economic Forum, and has been a member of the Society of International Business Fellows since 1983. He served on the Nominating Committee formed by the International Accounting Standards Board, and he is an International Councilor of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Copeland is a graduate of Georgia State University. He and his wife, Patricia, married for 35 years, are both Georgia natives. They have two sons, Trip and David, and four grandsons. |
