Georgia State University Executive DBA student, Colonel BP McCoy, delivered a talk titled, “Leading Through Adversity…The Act of Creating Belief,” to the University of Oklahoma football team earlier this year. BP is about to start his third and final year in the Executive DBA program. With the successful defense of his dissertation this next academic year, BP will add another title before his name as he is conferred Dr. McCoy in the spring.
We asked BP a few questions about his message and why this talk meant so much to him.
How did the opportunity to give a speech to the OU football team come about?
I had spoken last veteran’s day to the OU Vets and Green Zone folks and was recognized at the OU vs OSU football game as the “Patriot of the Game.”
What are your ties to the University of Oklahoma?
I’m an alumni 1984. My Dad and both of my sons are graduates of OU.
Have you given speeches to other groups?
I speak to organizations frequently about organizational culture and change (topic of my dissertation) and about leading through adversity.
Do you have a small part of the speech that you would like to share?
I like to stimulate introspection in my talks and make them interactive. One approach I use is to display a quote by Heraclitus from 2500 years ago during the Greek Peloponnesian War.
