Brian Basweti, M.S. in Commercial Real Estate
project manager, Jones Lang LaSalle
Why did you choose Robinson for your graduate education?
Georgia State University and the Robinson College of Business have a rich history with a solid reputation. Located in the heart of Atlanta, Robinson has been at the center of the commercial real estate space, impacting every development in the state. The program curriculum is industry-driven and taught by industry experts who act as mentors. Additionally, the school’s strategic campus locations give me an opportunity to participate in an extremely active real estate market.
How will the degree propel your career goals?
In my home country of Kenya, a lot of investment is going into development projects in transport, energy, water, urban development, health, public sector management, and social protection. There is a great need to proceed with projects that are feasible and promote economic good. My interests lie in the infrastructure and housing spaces.
In the long run, I intend to build investment skills and establish a real estate fund for emerging markets.
What unique background and perspectives will you bring to classroom discussions?
I have experienced firsthand the crisis of dilapidated housing and poor infrastructure. My decision to pursue construction management in undergrad at the University of Nairobi stemmed from the desire to provide lasting solutions to the aforementioned challenges. I have overseen the development of $100 million USD worth of construction projects at Imaran Group and Jones Lang LaSalle, and I look forward to sharing my insights on development management.
What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
I would describe myself as risk averse. However, I intermittently take risks and quit football to concentrate on my studies in high school. (The schedules clashed.) I was a talented football player albeit too small in size. I strongly believe I would have made a career scoring screamers and dazzling the defenders with quickstep dummies, but I am glad the risk I took with education is equally rewarding.
