Robinson’s Ph.D. program in accountancy aims to graduate individuals who are highly qualified and sought after for faculty positions in research-oriented universities.
The program focuses on preparing students to critique and produce accounting research that is publishable in premier accounting journals. During the program, students take required doctoral seminars in accounting and research methodology as well as elective seminars in other areas consistent with their research interests (e.g., economics, finance and psychology). Students are expected to work closely with faculty to develop a research portfolio in addition to their required dissertation.

Digital Innovation Concentration, Ph.D. in Business Administration
Center for Digital Innovation
You will be part of the Center for Digital Innovation, a college-level interdisciplinary research center on digital innovation that focuses on adding value and addressing high-impact problems in business and society. You will receive a Ph.D. in computer information systems and leave prepared for a career at a major research university.
In consultation with the Ph.D. coordinator and other faculty, you will configure a program of study that will include subject matter seminars in information systems and other disciplines, a rigorous sequence of research methods courses (e.g., econometrics, statistics, computational techniques, experimental design, qualitative techniques), a course in theory development, and a course in university teaching. A collaborative mentoring approach is used for your ongoing scholastic development. From the start of the program, you will work closely with one or more faculty members.
Our faculty are ranked among the leading scholars in information systems and routinely publish their work, often in collaboration with current and former Ph.D. students, in the best scholarly journals in information systems and other disciplines.

Doctor of Business Administration
Robinson’s Doctor of Business Administration is a 3-year, cohort-based, part-time doctoral degree program designed for senior-level professionals. Upon graduation, you will be able to apply research methodology and business theory to practical problems, and develop new perspectives on leadership, global change, and decision making. Through this rigorous and intellectually stimulating process, you will be transformed on a personal and professional level.
This mission is accomplished by helping executives develop general competence in applied research (including demonstrating knowledge of relevant theory and scholarly literature) while creating new knowledge on contemporary business problems through rigorous, hands-on coursework as well as the writing and defense of a dissertation.
Choose a Unique Program Design
To help students graduate in 3 years, the Georgia State DBA program use a unique design that consists of two major parts.
- First, in semesters 1-3 we provide students with the knowledge and experiences they need to develop a dissertation. This includes courses where students learn qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as a group research project in which students experience a full research cycle from real-world problem to publication.
- Second, in semesters 4-6 students build on this theoretical and practical foundation to develop and defend their individual dissertations in close collaboration with their advisor and dissertation committee, and
- Third, in addition to teaching our students problem-solving skills through rigorous research, throughout the program we also develop their skills and theoretical knowledge to be better business leaders with coursework on decision-making, managing organizations, leadership, digital innovation, and evidenced-based management.

Through Robinson’s Ph.D. in finance, you will be prepared for a successful career in academia, government institutions, or the private sector.
You will undertake a rigorous course of study based on economic and financial theory as well as applied methods. In addition to building the skills necessary for undertaking original research, you will develop collaborative relationships with leading research faculty in key areas of finance, including corporate finance, investments, and financial institutions. Recent graduates from the Ph.D. program typically have obtained placements at major U.S. research universities and teaching institutions.

All of Robinson’s Ph.D. students also may pursue a specialization in international business.
Since globalization continues to impact all areas of business, this specialization is an excellent complement to all majors, providing in-depth research and teaching expertise necessary to succeed in today’s competitive academic marketplace.

Department of Management
The Department of Management offers two doctoral specializations: organizational behavior & human resources, and strategy. Applicants must select one of the two specializations but have the opportunity to take seminars in both specializations facilitating cross-disciplinary research.
- Organizational Behavior & Human Resources
Faculty in the organizational behavior & human resources specialization research a wide range of topics including leadership, culture, health and well-being, affect, creativity, job attitudes, negotiations, gender, socialization, and social exchange. Our faculty make influential theoretical and empirical contributions that simultaneously impact organizational practice. Our faculty within this specialization publish in premier academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organizational Science, and Administrative Science Quarterly.
- Strategy
Faculty in the strategy specialization research a wide range of topics including competition and corporate strategy, organizational innovation and learning, managerial and organizational cognition, organizational identity, compensation, and governance. The Department of Marketing’s Marketing RoundTable and Sales Executive RoundTable bring leading figures in business and academics to campus. Risk Management & Insurance Concentration, Ph.D. in Business Administration
Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Science
The Ph.D. program in risk management and insurance is designed to educate students in the concepts and analytical techniques required for cutting-edge research related to risk.
The program encompasses the study of the sources of risk, the effects of risk on the decisions of individuals and firms, the impact of these decisions on society, and the management of risk through financial institutions. Scholarly research at the frontier of risk management requires in-depth study of economics, finance, applied mathematics and statistics.
This training typically leads to academic careers at other major business schools and economics departments, or research positions in banks or insurance firms.
