The purpose of this class is to provide course credit for students enrolled in the Master of Professional Accountancy, Master of Taxation and undergraduate accounting programs who have an accounting internship.
The field study is a three-credit-hour, supervised, employer-site learning experience. In this experience, students have the opportunity to apply accounting and/or tax skills in a professional setting. Students are required to submit five journals describing their internship experience and schedule a recap interview with the course instructor at the end of the semester. More detailed course requirements are below in the “Getting Started & Course Requirements” section.
In addition to having an internship, you must meet the other prerequisites for your desired course:
- ACCT 4391
- ACCT 4112 with a 3.0 GPA or higher
- enrolled as an undergraduate accounting major
- meet Robinson upper division course requirements and have completed 45 semester hours
- ACCT 8391
- Master of Professional Accountancy student with a 2.7 or higher GPA
- TX 8391
- Master of Taxation student
- TX 8020 with minimum grade of B
Accounting is a broad and varied field. Your position should be related to one of the following areas in accounting:
- financial accounting
- public accounting
- government accounting
- forensic accounting
- management accounting
- internal auditing
- information systems and audit control
- The course is only for internships (called such by the employer) with expected beginning and ending work dates.
- Students may not register for the course for a current job or a job started during the semester unless the job is an internship.
- Student will register for the field study course only during the semester of the internship.
- The internship may be paid or unpaid.
- The internship must be at least 8 weeks.
- The internship must be at least 180 hours in total during the semester.
- Most internship are for the entire semester. If the internship does not cover the entire semester, the due dates for deliverables (i.e., journals, semester project, etc.) as defined in the course syllabus will be adjusted accordingly
- If you are not sure what kind of experience your job may be, please clarify with your employer.
Getting Started & Course Requirements
The course instructor will notify all registered students the first week of class as listed on GoSolar for the respective semester via iCollege. It is important that you check your official GSU email and iCollege for communication from the professor.
The course has four main components:
Description of Experience
generally due within the first week of the course start
five journals detailing your internship experience
Employer Confirmation Email Regarding Internship Completion
prior to the end of the semester, your internship firm must send an email confirming your completion of the internship to the instructor
Recap Interview With Instructor
prior to the end of the semester, you must complete a 30 minute interview with the instructor. The purpose of the interview is to discuss your internship duties and takeaways from the experience
Registering for the Course
You will be notified by email if you are approved for your respective field studies course. Please follow your normal registration procedures and deadlines once you have been approved for the course. It is important that you follow your normal registration procedures since the professor will only contact registered students.

Taking the Course Again
Students are allowed to take the course a maximum of two times. To take the course a second time, the experience must be substantially different in nature. For example, a student may work with the same firm doing audit type work in the first internship and tax work in the second internship.
