RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT IN RESEARCH
All undergraduates, graduate students and post-docs involved in empirical research at Georgia State University are required to undertake Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) education and training as part of their requirements for graduation or employment. As part of this educational requirement, web-based training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is available for GSU faculty, staff and students.
Responsible Conduct in Research Requirements
At the Robinson College of Business, the following four groups are affected:
- Master’s graduate assistants (GAs)
- Ph.D. students
- Doctor of Business Administration students
- Post-doctoral fellows
See the appropriate section below for more information.
Master’s Graduate Assistants (GAs)
Students should become aware of the requirement when they apply for a GA position with the Robinson College of Business. The faculty member hiring the student will be required to sign and date a GA research verification form and indicate through a check box whether the GA will be engaged in research. These forms will be maintained by the Office of Research and Ph.D. Programs. The penalty for student noncompliance is to withhold the student’s funding for the term subsequent to the noncompliance and to prohibit the student from engaging in research until the requirement is met.
Students will be expected to complete the requirement by the middle of the October if their appointment is for the fall term or by the middle of February for the spring term. For GA appointments in the summer term, students will have to complete the requirements by the middle of October. Penalties for student noncompliance are to drop the student from a current or future GA appointment until the requirement is successfully completed.
Students should submit a copy of the certificate that is issued at the completion of the CITI training to the Robinson Office of Research and Ph.D. Programs. Those who have not completed it will be given a short time frame to successfully pass the CITI training.
The instructor(s) of the 5 hours of discussion-based education will collect sign-up sheets of those who have attended. Documentation will be as follows:
- Sign-up sheets during each section between session breaks
- Entry by date and success status into database of a master list of GAs
- Maintenance of this database by the Robinson Office of Research and Ph.D. Programs
Ph.D. Students
Ph.D. students should become aware of the requirement when they are accepted for admission to the Robinson College of Business. The language in the official cover letter in response to their application will be as follows: “Georgia State University abides by the ‘Responsible Conduct in Research’ requirements and you will need to enroll at citiprogram.org and successfully complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training in research ethics. Students will print off the web page indicating that they have successfully completed the CITI training and file this with the Office of Research and Doctoral Programs. A second requirement is that students attend a 5-hour session of discussion-based education in the responsible conduct in research. Your Ph.D. work at GSU is dependent on your participation in this 5-hour discussion-based education as well as the CITI training. You must complete both the CITI training and the 5 hours of discussion-based education by the middle of the October in your first term in the Ph.D. program.”
They will be expected to complete the requirement by the middle of October in the fall term.
The Office of Research and Ph.D. Programs will maintain the master list of those who have completed the CITI training and 5 hours of discussion-based education. Those who do not complete the CITI training will be given a short time frame to successfully pass it. The instructor(s) of the 5 hours of discussion-based education will collect sign-up sheets of those who have attended. Documentation will be as follows:
- Sign-up sheets during each section between session breaks
- Entry by date and success status into database of a master list of Ph.D. students
- Maintenance of this database by the Robinson Office of Research and Ph.D. Programs
The penalty for student noncompliance is to withhold the student’s funding for the term subsequent to the noncompliance and to prohibit the student from engaging in research until the requirement is met.
