Embracing History
Atlanta has long been known as “the cradle of the Civil Rights movement.” Internationally recognized leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, Ralph David Abernathy Sr., John Lewis, Dr. Roslyn Pope, and John Wesley Dobbs, among many others, helped build the nonviolent movement in the 1950s and 1960s to combat racial injustice in the South as well as around the U.S.
Establishments such as the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and Atlanta History Center preserve the city’s proud legacy of leadership and activism.
